Topic Taster Sessions

HRD will be holding over 60 free learning showcases over the three day event. The sessions have been designed to provide visitors with an opportunity to experience learning and development products and services through the Learning Arena, Topic Tasters and Technology for Learning.

MaST will be running two interactive 30minute Topic Tasters which will give you valuable information to use back at the office.

Tuesday 15th April 2008
12.15 – 12.45
Mark Mercer and guest speaker Dr Peter Honey

People are built to learn – or are they?
Is learning a reflex – like breathing or is it developed? This interactive session featuring Peter Honey, will look at the way people learn and the benefits of treating learning as a learnable skill?

MaST and Peter Honey will together look at the way in which people learn. Most people prefer to treat learning as a reflex, leaving it switched to ‘automatic’. We will explore if these people actually lose out on the learning process.

The audience will have some involvement during the session and will be able to share their experience. Further interaction with MaST and Peter Honey will be available on the stand.

Wednesday 16th April 2008

Managing is a balancing act
Needs to implement change often clash with needs to deliver daily outputs. Managers receive conflicting messages which swing in and out of favour. We will give you a framework to help balance dynamic tensions within your organisation.

During this session we will introduce the competing values framework along with an activity to explore the competing tensions. Participants will be able do a self assessment of where they are now and where they want to be in relation to these competing tensions. We will also look at the different management roles within the framework and the fundamental state of leadership.

Participants will leave the session with an understanding of the competing values framework and will be able to apply this to their organisation. They will also appreciate the need to balance managerial roles across the 4 quadrants of the framework.

The sessions are free to attend but places are only available on a first–come first-served basis on the day.
