Congratulations to Blackpool Victoria Hospital for achieving their 'Gold Investors in People' award.  No mean feat.  Part of that award was due to their partnership with MaST in providing a range of programmes for Clinical Leaders, Managers in the Trust Directorates and Nursing Managers.

Action Learning Sets are making a real difference at Blackpool NHS.  All Managers on the 'Clinical Leadership' and 'Taking Leadership Further' modular programmes are also part of a MaST facilitated Action Learning Set.  The use of Action Learning Sets provides direct contribution to the Trust’s improvement strategy and enables delegates to work on real life problems with the other delegates as a resource of information and ideas.  They are dealing with gritty issues like:

  • Reducing bed waiting times
  • Designing campaigns to engage clinical staff in avoiding the serious problem of sepsis (inflammation of the whole body) and dealing with bugs on a daily basis
  • Improving pathology laboratories and making the experience better for the patient
  • Working with diagnostics more effectively and closer to the patient to save time and bed space

We have also completed a series of Development Centres as part of a significant Talent Management initiative at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust and we are now starting a focused series of Management Workshops, combined with Action Learning Sets for Nursing Managers.

The Strategic Health Authority are pioneering a new approach to student placements for all medical disciplines and MaST are very pleased to be working with them in the North West.  The pilots are going well and the NHS Trusts, Universities and Placement Managers are all very committed to the success of these improvements.
