Flexible influencing styles to help your people succeed – March 2007

Tuesday 6 March 2007 – Reading Moat House, Nr Wokingham

Thursday 15 March 2007 – Novotel Tower Bridge, London

People with responsibility in organisations spend most of their time trying to influence others: their staff, colleagues, managers, clients, suppliers…inside and outside of the organisation. Typical challenges include improving staff performance, resolving conflict, motivating, giving direction, selling ideas, competing for resources and negotiating. People with a limited range of influencing styles are restricted in their ability to tackle the above issues effectively.

The move from autocratic, structured, tightly supervised cultures to looser, team-based, global project management climates has created the need for people to be more self-reliant and personally competent, to achieve the organisation’s objectives. People can use their personal power in a positive way to achieve results. Having some positional power can give people an advantage in an influencing situation but they will still need a range of styles to build commitment in others.

Based on principles from the Positive Power and Influence Programme, by arrangement with Chartwell Learning & Development Ltd, exclusive UK and Ireland licensee for the PPI Programme.

Summary of forums

During these forums we looked at the various styles of influencing which we can choose from when faced with different situations. By completing an ‘Influence Style Inventory’* we were able to see our own influencing profiles and what this meant in the workplace. To give a real feel for the ‘Situational Influence Model’* attendees took part in an interactive demonstration. With this, we also discussed the planning and performing points to think about when engaging in the various styles. We finished the forum with ideas and situations on where we could improve our influencing skills. * © 2006 Situation Management Systems, Inc. 05/04)
